Best Places For: Bars to Have a Nibble in

Those great places where you can pop in for a drink and nibble on something fabulous…

This month I feature my recommendations for food driven bars:

Brighton

My favourite. I almost didn’t include this for fear of it getting too busy! The venue itself has a relaxed casual, rustic but hip feel. The vibe is buzzy and thriving. The music is always interesting but doesn’t dominate. What does dominate is the amazing wine list – something its known for, a real education in biodynamic, organic wines as well as the classics. There is a large selection by the glass and carafe allowing you to try many if you are so inclined. But to think this place is just about the wine would be a mistake – the cocktail list is a joy, regularly changing, the list features the classics but also innovative and seasonal concoctions.

If you’re feeling peckish you can order from a menu of small plates which features excellent charcuterie, oysters and vegetarian selections as well as the famous large ‘platters’ of delicious food (hence the name), every element of which is carefully and skilfully cooked. All of this can be enjoyed at the bar or at a table. But if you want the more traditional sit down three courses – the Plat du Jour is always impressive. French modern bistro food at its best.

Fourth and Church

A relative newcomer, similar to Ten Green Bottles (also great), but with more emphasis on the food. This is a wine shop supplied by Butlers Wine allowing you to choose a bottle to drink in-house or order from the drinks menu, many of which are by the glass (including Ridgeview). They also have a good selection of lesser known spirits including gins and a particularly good selection of English wine.

The food is great, ranging from high quality charcuterie and cheeses to soups, salads and small plates such as Smoked aubergine, mint, pomegranate, soused mackerel and celeriac remoulade or caramelised onion tart with olives, lemon thyme and pine nuts. With weekly changing menu items, this is a perfect place for a tipple and a nibble.

The Salt Room

Known for it’s excellent seafood and fish, it’s easy to forget that there is actually a great bar here. It would be a shame if this bar just became the place to wait for your table because it is such a good space. Beautiful décor, lighting and warm chatty staff. The gin and cocktail lists are impressive.

Enjoy the famous salt cod fritters with an aperitif. Perfect.
