Wine Lovers: Q&A with Carlos Delage of Viña Real

The Jetty Restaurant at Brighton’s Harbour Hotel hosts a Spanish winemakers dinner with Viña Real on 8 March.

We catch up with Carlos Delage, Viña Real’s export director, to find out a little more about these unique wines.

Where’s the location of winery and the terroir?

Viña Real is located in Laguardia, Rioja Alavesa, and their vineyards are located mainly in Limestone and very poor soils.

What grape varieties are grown?

The main grape grown is Tempranillo, around 80-85%, and the rest is a blend between Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo.

What are the qualities of the wines?

Viña Real is all about quality and innovation never forgetting our tradition. What really makes Viña Real unique is the capacity of ageing; a great wine has to be a great wine today and in 20 years. Now that´s a great wine!

What foods are the best to match with Viña Real wines?

We can have some pheasant or red deer with Viña Real Reserva, salmon with Viña Real Crianza, or just enjoy Viña Real Gran Reserva by itself in front of the fireplace.

How did you get into the wine industry?

Good question! I think Mum used to “blend” some sherry with milk when I was a baby!! She is a Sherry winemaker and family business is downtown in Jerez, so I grew up between vines and barrels.

Is this your first visit to Brighton?

I’ve been already several times in Brighton and looking forward to come back again.
